Auction Legacy News & Press Releases

The Vancouver summer auction season kicked off in fine form Thursday night with several record-breaking sales as Heffel Fine Art Auction House held its Fine Canadian Art sale. Sales totalled $11.5-million.

Among the highlights for Heffel: a gorgeous 21.6 centimetre by 26.7 centimetre oil-on-panel sketch by Tom Thomson sold for $1.15 million (including buyer’s premium) - not a record bid for a Thomson, but hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the estimate provided by the auction house.

Tamarack Swamp (Sketch #5), once owned by the artist’s sister, was among the most anticipated lots of the evening.

“[It's] the second highest Thomson to sell at auction and far exceeded the low estimate by two-and-a-half times,” the art auctioneer  said after the approximate three hour auction.
